When ye look round this ‘ere blogosphere, one of the consistent things you find people talking about is the issue of flexible phones, or rather, phones that have flexible, foldable screens. The technology ain’t quite there yet… well, alright, the technology is nowhere near ready yet, but foldable screens aregoing to happen. It’s just that no-one has any idea when they’ll finally hit the market.
Well, except for Samsung, of course; according toBusiness Wire (Google-translated link), Samsung’s CEO, Kwon Oh Hyun, reckons that the Korean manufacturer will have devices will folding screens on the market, in 2015.
So, what’s the crack?
Welp, the first point to make is that I honestly reckon we’re unlikely to see completely, totally, 100% flexible, bendable phones, or at least, not in 2015, anyway. There was a video knocking about that Samsung made (which is where the pic on this blog post is from), showing off a device that looks kinda sort like a wallet or, for those with long memories, a filofax. It could fold in half, and had a big ol’ screen on the outside of the case, but the crucial bit was that it had a foldable screen inside, that was twice as big. In essence, it was a phone and a tablet, in one (and not in the phablet sense).
So, basically, I’d be expecting something like that if I were you, rather than a Samsung Galaxy S4 that ye can fold into a teeny weeny little ball to shove in yer pocket.
Oh, and Hyun also intimated that we’d see these kind of foldable screens in wearable technology, too, so it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw a future incarnation of the Samsung Galaxy Gear, where the screen makes up a sizeable chunk of the wristband itself (I can’t deny it, either; that would be kinda cool). So yeah, unless anyone else beats them to it (let’s not forget that LG also released a phone with a curved screen, too, so they could well try to beat Samsung to market), Samsung could end up being the first company to release a bendy phone.
